Cyprus launches environment awareness campaign for university students

The office of the Commissioner of Environment in Cyprus is launching an awareness campaign for university students on environment challenges, titled “Get involved with the environment”. The campaign is taking place with the cooperation of the Cyprus Energy Office and students’ associations.

Between 12-15 October the campaign will run at the Universities across the island.

Environment Commissioner, Klelia Vassiliou told the press  that we need to realize that earth and the environment is our home, adding that we are part of the air we breathe, the soil that nourishes us, the water we drink and the nature that surrounds us and therefore we need to protect them.

She referred to global and EU actions for the climate crisis such as the  Paris Agreement and the Global Climate Agreement, the European Green Agreement etc, noting that we need a lot of scientific knowledge, specialization and training, and that is why we invest in our students and the younger generation.

Savvas Vlachos, Director of the Cyprus Energy Office said that via this initiative, there is an opportunity for interaction with the student community in order to record students’ views and suggestions on environmental issues.

President of POFEN,  the students’ association Maria Tziamali said that students have realized the urgent need for a new environmental culture and they try via various initiatives to form innovative environmental perceptions among the younger generations.
