Cyprus will be organising the 9th Ministerial Conference of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The decision was taken unanimously during a meeting of the Committee for Environmental Policy (CEP), of UNECE, by the 56 member states of the UNECE region. The Conference will be held in Cyprus from November 3 to 5, 2021.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Education, this may be the most important UN conference on the environment, which is held every five years with the participation of over 1,000 national delegates from around 80 countries.
The Conference gains added importance through education for sustainable development, since this is a priority along with the circular/green economy and sustainable tourism, which together will comprise the three main themes of the Conference and will be discussed on a political level, followed by the adoption of policies and strategies, which in turn will significantly affect national policies.
“Cyprus’ success is tremendous, given the political importance of the Conference, the effects the decisions to be taken on education, the environment and sustainable development, and the fact that for the first time the Conference will take place in a Mediterranean country,” the press release says.
It adds that the Ministerial Conference holds multiple benefits for Cyprus.
