Grants for Environmental Investigative Journalism: opportunities for Mediterranean cooperation

The Journalismfund Europe vzw, based in Brussels, launched a grant programme to support cross-border teams of professional journalists and/or news outlets to conduct investigations into environmental affairs related to Europe. The investigation needs to focus on a cross-border environmental issue that has a strong connection to Europe. This means that the investigation can also involve issues and locations outside Europe, if there is a link with European companies, banks, policies

This grant programme is therefore aimed at cross-border teams of investigative journalists and newsrooms to investigate and document illegal, unreported and unregulated abuse of nature that involves European affairs in and outside Europe.

The grant can cover working time and expenses such as logistics, travel, insurance, access to legal support, translations, access to technology and data sets, etc.

They are looking for good ideas for an investigation, a cross-border team of at least two journalists or news outlets, and at least two letters of intent from professional news outlets who are willing to publish the result of your investigation.

In practice, grants could vary from e.g. €2,000 for smaller investigations to €20,000 or even more for very large investigations that involve newsrooms in many countries, require a lot of research and expenses, data access, legal screening, etc., and yield a large series of publications.

The grants can also offer support to preliminary work in the development of new investigative projects.

The upcoming application deadline will be Thursday 23 January 2025 at 1 pm CET (Brussels time).
