Τhe total amount of municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus in 2016 stood at 545 thousand tonnes compared to 541 thousand tonnes in 2015, recording an increase of 0.8%, according to the Statistical Service.
The total amount of waste treated in 2016 was 521 thousand tonnes, of which 78.7% was disposed to landfills, 14.1% was sorted for recycling, 4% was sorted for composting and the remaining 3.2% was used for backfilling, it is added.
According to the announcement, transmitted by PIO, during 2015, the amount of municipal solid waste generated per inhabitant in the European Union was 476 kg. Data for 2016 are not yet available.
In Cyprus, the per capita generation of municipal solid waste in 2015 reached 642 kg, which is the second highest among the member states of the EU. Denmark has the highest per capita generation of municipal solid waste (789 kg), while Cyprus was followed by Germany (625 kg), Luxembourg (625 kg) and Malta (624 kg).
