A major international conference on 19 and 20 May gathered in Rome authorities and experts, voices of formal, non-formal and informal education and communication organisations from Italy and the world. The Carabinieri’s Forestry, Environmental and Agri-Food Units Command (CUFAA) in cooperation with the World Environment Education Network (WECC) organised this relevant event that aims to renovate commitments, agreements and synergies to relaunch the protection of biodiversity in a year full of events and important anniversaries.
Our colleague, Bianca La Placa, journalist and working at the WEEC network, participated moderating two sessions devoted to best practices on awareness raising and education for biodiversity and environment, and the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation was invited to make a presentation on the Mediterranean Environmental Information Communicators Network as an good example of collaboration between environmental journalists and regional organisations working for nature protection at Mediterranean level.
During the two days experts discussed on challenges and opportunities for environmental education and communication in the new context of ecological transition. Several relevant authorities from international organisations such as Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Stefania Giannini (Deputy Director General of UNESCO with responsibility for education), the two co-chairs of the IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel Luthando Dziba (who is also Director of the National Parks of South Africa) and Marie Stenseke, the IUCN (with Jo Hopkins and Sean Southey) addressed the participants in the inauguration session.
