Two tonnes of garbage, 531 tonnes of recyclables collected during Cyprus Zero Waste Beach campaign

Two tonnes of garbage and 531 tonnes of recyclable garbage were collected during the Zero Waste Beach campaign by AKTI Project and Research Center and Coca-Cola in Cyprus, with the support of the Coca-Cola Foundation. Moreover five tonnes of garbage were recycled within three months  in 50 PMD bins donated in the framework of the project.

In 2019 a total of 18 shore cleanup campaigns and 10 sea bottom cleanups were carried out.

The campaign involved 540 volunteers and 18 local authorities. In particular, 1,600 kg of garbage was recovered from the bottom of the sea, while another 220 kg were collected during the coastline cleanup.

According to the press release, the 10 sea bottom cleanup campaigns were financed by Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero. In particular Coca-Cola contributed 15% of its net sales of its summer bottles, raising € 15,000 for the further support of the Zero Beach Waste Program.

Moreover, as part of the On-the-go Recycling Program and Action, which aims to encourage local authorities and local communities to reduce plastic waste and improve collection and recycling infrastructure, 50 PMD recycling bins were donated and set up in coastal areas of Paphos. In just three months, five tonnes of waste have been collected and recycled from the 50 PMD recycling bins.

The Zero Waste Beach campaign will wrap up with an event on November 7th, where awards will be given to companies for the best practices.
