Cyprus volunteer organizations came together to clean the seabed of the coastal city of Agia Napa, in Cyprus, in an area that stretches to 1 km and collected more than 5 kg of cigarette butts and plastic litter.
Head of the Research Center ‘’Enalia’’ Marios Papageorgiou said that the event took place in the framework of a bicommunal program named «Marine Litter for Synergies, Capacity-building and Peacebuilding» funded by the EU. It is implemented by Famagusta Walled City Association (MASDER), AKTI Research Center, Enalia and Diving Centres Association in occupied Cyprus.
A total of 38 individuals participated in the cleaning of the seabed and another 18 the coast. Volunteers said that in a period of just 20 -30 minutes they gathered a huge amount of litter. They noted that they found a lot of plastic litter in the bottom of the sea.
One volunteer said that the cigarette butts can be recycled and used to produce ink.
